In a statement to the police, Praveen’s wife, Amarjit Kaur, said that on the morning of April 24, Praveen Kumar had gone to work as a daily wage laborer at the poultry farm of Jasvir Singh, a resident of Bhagwal village. The wife says Praveen told her that Jasvir Singh had given him alcohol. When Praveen went to get water from the tap, Jasvir stopped him and said the bottle contained clean water.

Amarjit Kaur said that as soon as Praveen mixed the liquid from the bottle with the alcohol and drank it, his condition deteriorated. His eyes swelled and foam started coming out of his mouth. When Praveen told his wife what had happened, she asked their younger son, Sandeep Kumar, to go to the farmhouse and bring the bottle. The family still has that bottle.
