The police is making every effort to curb and eliminate the increasing drug abuse and loot in Punjab, yet the cases of drug abuse and loot are not decreasing. Recently, a case of fraud has come to light at an HDFC Bank ATM in Jalandhar’s Rama Mandi area.
It is being reported that the fraudsters tampered with the machine, inserted the card of a woman, Anju Bala, and withdrew Rs 40,000 on the pretext of helping her. The SHO, who reached the spot, has started an investigation and is examining the CCTV footage.
The incident took place when the victim and his family went to withdraw money from an HDFC Bank ATM and inserted their card in the ATM machine. But neither the money nor the cards came out from the ATM machine. A fake helpline number was displayed on the machine, and she was asked to contact it.
Some men standing nearby said that the number belonged to the bank and that bank employees would come and fix the machine. When the woman called the number, the accused kept her engaged in conversation. Meanwhile, the fraudsters cleverly obtained her PIN and used the card to withdraw money from her account four times.
By the time the victim realized she had been duped, messages about the money being deducted had already appeared on her mobile phone. She immediately blocked her ATM card. By then, the accused had fled. The victim woman stated that one of the accused was wearing a torn red T-shirt.

The police stated that their team was on patrol when they noticed a crowd outside the ATM. Investigation revealed that the slip or number entered on the ATM machine did not belong to the bank, but to the fraudsters.
The police are contacting the bank to obtain CCTV footage of the incident. The SHO has asked the victim’s family to file a detailed complaint at the police station so that the accused can be identified based on the time and transaction, and strict action can be taken.
