Kulwinder Singh, a member of the victim’s family, said that a few days earlier, they had performed their mother’s last rites and, as per custom, had collected the ashes and placed them in a place. When they went to retrieve them, they were missing. Kulwinder said that this incident is not just about theft but also about religious sentiments, which he will never forget.
This incident occurred in a village near Amritsar, where the theft has created an atmosphere of fear and anger among the people. The situation has now become such that thieves have not even spared places like cremation grounds.
Recently, an iron gate, electrical wires, and other items were stolen from a cremation ground in Kathunangal. The ashes of a family were also stolen, causing grief and anger among the villagers.

Other villagers reported that thefts of wives, household items, and iron gates from cremation grounds have become commonplace. A villager reported that his buffalo, worth lakhs of rupees, was stolen, but no concrete action has been taken yet.
The village head, Jatinder Pal Singh, said that the situation is very bad. Crime is increasing due to drug abuse and unemployment. However, no action is being taken by the government or police. He said that drug addicts come to the crematorium and litter there.
The police say that the theft cases are being taken seriously and are being investigated thoroughly. Some cases are being verified, and the truth will soon emerge. The culprits will be apprehended.
