Prisoner, who was Serving Sentence for 11 Years, Hanged Himself in Faridkot Central Jail

Recently, news emerged from Faridkot, where an inmate committed suicide in the Central Jail on the night of May 4th. The deceased inmate has been identified as Balwinder Singh, son of Tara Singh, a resident of Kathgarh village in Fazilka.

This is the third case of suicide by an inmate in Faridkot Jail in the last 10 days. It is reported that the inmate had been serving a sentence of approximately 11 years in a murder case registered at Police Station Sadar Jalalabad (Fazilka).

The jail administration reported that the inmate hanged himself from a bathroom fitting in his barrack. Upon receiving information about the incident, he was admitted to Civil Hospital Faridkot in an unconscious state, where doctors declared him dead.

The jail administration and the Faridkot City Police Station are currently investigating the matter. It is reported that this is the third suicide case in the jail within 10 days. Previously, on April 25th, a prisoner named Jugnu Baba from Ludhiana committed suicide by hanging himself, and on May 3rd, a prisoner named Swarnjit Singh from Ferozepur also committed suicide by hanging.

Jail Superintendent Iqbal Singh stated that the jail administration periodically attempts to alleviate the mental stress of prisoners and undertrials, and counseling is also sought. Often, domestic problems and prolonged lack of contact with family lead prisoners to take such extreme steps due to mental stress.

Iqbal Singh stated that to prevent such cases, counseling for prisoners and undertrials will be intensified to ensure they remain mentally healthy.
