Recently, sad news has come to light that Jalandhar’s well-known sports personality and famous hockey promoter Gurvinder Singh Bathla, who was fondly called Gullu ji, passed away on 7th April. Gurvinder Singh Bathla was retired from Punjab and Sindh Bank and was also a founder member of Surjit Hockey Society. Gurvinder Singh spent his life promoting sports and working for the welfare of sportspersons. The last rites of hockey promoter Gurvinder Singh Bathla will be performed today on 9th April at 12 noon at GTB Nagar crematorium. The news of Gurvinder’s death shocked sports lovers and well-known personalities of the city.
Gurvinder Singh Bathla was considered a legend in sports administration. Gurvinder also worked as the Sports Secretary at Punjab & Sindh Bank. His passion for hockey can be gauged from the fact that he was a founding member of the Surjit Hockey Society and served as Chief PRO for a long time. Bathla promoted the hockey nursery in Jalandhar and provided a platform to new players.
Gurvinder, besides being a respected member of the Gymkhana Club since 1990, was also associated with the Punjab Sports Welfare Association since 1995. He always supported the players. Apart from sports, Gurvinder Singh also ran ‘Bathla Marriage Consultant’ for the last 20 years, through which he arranged marriages for countless people and did the noble work of uniting families.

His family, including his wife Balwinder Kaur Bathla (Dolly), son Simerdeep Singh Bathla, daughter-in-law Sifat Kaur, daughter Tanya (a well-known entertainment anchor), son-in-law Sohim Takkar, and grandson Tahimveer Singh, are deeply saddened by Gurvinder’s death. The entire sports world and the city’s residents have expressed their condolences to the family in this time of grief.
