Big Drug Bust in Kapurthala: 16.8 Kg Heroin Seized, 4 Arrested!

Punjab Police has been running a campaign to make Punjab drug-free, in which Punjab Police recently busted a Pakistan-backed international drug trafficking gang. During this operation, Kapurthala Police arrested four members of the gang along with a woman on April 7. 16.8 kg of heroin was recovered from the gang.

On April 7, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that the arrested accused have been identified as Sumanpreet Kaur of Gohalwar in Amritsar, Balwinder Singh of Pandori Mohalla in Sultanpur Lodhi, and Harpal Singh and Jaskaranbir Singh of Dauke village in Amritsar. Police also seized a grey Maruti Baleno car used by the accused for smuggling.

DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that this drug smuggling network was being operated on orders from handlers based in Pakistan and Dubai. This large consignment of heroin was brought from the Amritsar border area and was now destined for Chandigarh. DGP Gaurav stated that forward and backward linkages are being investigated to uncover the roots of this entire network. The DGP stated that more arrests and significant recoveries will be made in the coming days.

Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Tura stated that based on information, Phagwara police teams laid a strategic trap and tracked down and seized the accused’s Baleno car.

The SSP further stated that when police attempted to stop the suspect Baleno car, the accused tried to run over the police team in an attempt to escape. After chasing the car at high speed for some distance, the police had to fire bullets at the tires to stop the car.

Upon searching the car, 16.8 kg of heroin was found. In this case, FIR No. 27, dated 07.04.2026, has been registered at Police Station Sadar Phagwara under Section 21C of the NDPS Act and Section 111 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police are conducting further investigation.
