Recently, Tata Steel has set up a plant in the industrial sector of Ludhiana, Punjab. On 20 March 2026, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann inaugurated India’s second Tata Steel Plant in Ludhiana.
Tata Steel’s second-largest plant has an investment of ₹3,200 crore, which is expected to provide direct employment to approximately 2700 people and indirect employment to 10,000 people. This will once again boost industrial growth in the state.
Addressing the people of Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann called this occasion a “historic day” for Punjab and said that the plant introduces green energy-based steel production through Electric Arc Furnace technology for the first time in the country. The Chief Minister believes that this project will strengthen the state’s economy and provide employment opportunities to local youth.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann emphasized that the state’s youth will now have access to good and numerous employment opportunities within their own state. One advantage of this will be that after higher education, they will not need to go abroad to work. The Tata Steel plant, spread over 115 acres, will use 100% stolen scrap, making it environmentally sustainable.
“Countries like Japan are already moving towards large-scale use of green energy,” Mann said. “With strong air, rail, and road connectivity, Punjab is now ready to compete globally. We have requested the Tata Group to start flights to Western countries for Punjabis living abroad.”
